Apple introduced genlock support on iPhone 17 Pro with compatible hardware, allowing precise synchronization across multiple cameras and inputs. For performance capture, effects, immersive rigs, repeated transitions, or long multicamera programs, that precision can remove hours of manual alignment. For a two-angle interview, it may be a complicated answer to a problem timecode and a clear audio reference already solve.

Use genlock when frame-level alignment changes the result or materially reduces post. Otherwise, keep the rig simple and invest in reliable sound, power, and monitoring.

Know the difference between the clocks

Timecode gives recordings a common time address. Genlock aligns when frames are captured. A system can share timecode and still drift or sample frames at slightly different moments. That distinction matters for live switching, compositing, arrays, performance analysis, and shots where multiple views must remain locked over time.

For many editorial multicam jobs, software sync, waveform alignment, or timecode is sufficient. The production should justify genlock with a concrete requirement, not a general desire to be professional.

  • Long takes where drift creates real post work.
  • Composites or transitions that depend on simultaneous frames.
  • Live or near-live switching with compatible infrastructure.

Design the rig as a system

List every phone, adapter, sync device, storage drive, audio input, cable, mount, battery, and monitoring path. Confirm which device supplies the reference and how the rig behaves if it disconnects. Secure cables so one operator move cannot interrupt recording or damage a port.

Match recording settings deliberately: frame rate, shutter, resolution, codec, Log profile, white balance, exposure strategy, and lens choice. Synchronized frames do not create matched images. Run a chart, skin-tone, and motion test before the performance arrives.

Protect storage, heat, and power

Multicamera ProRes or RAW creates several simultaneous high-data streams. Calculate real record time, offload time, backup capacity, and naming before the shoot. Label each camera and drive consistently so post can identify angles without opening every clip.

Phones can face thermal limits during sustained high-quality recording, especially in sun, cases, or dense rigs. Test the longest expected take plus margin. Keep screens, charging, wireless radios, and environmental heat in the test because a cool indoor five-minute clip proves very little.

  1. Run a take longer than the real program block.
  2. Verify every file before reformatting any drive.
  3. Record production audio separately when the job matters.
  4. Keep a slate and scratch reference as a recovery path.

Prove sync in post before the shoot

Import the test files into the actual NLE, build the multicam, and inspect the beginning and end of a long take. Check motion edges and audio phase, not only a static slate. Confirm that metadata and naming survive the transfer path.

A strong mobile multicam workflow has a graceful fallback. If genlock fails, timecode, slate, and scratch audio should still produce an editable program. Precision is valuable; resilience is professional.

No. Timecode labels when media occurs; genlock synchronizes the timing of captured frames across compatible devices.
Do I need genlock for a podcast?
