AI Video Provenance: A Content Credentials Checklist
As generated and captured media become harder to distinguish by sight, provenance becomes a production discipline. Content Credentials, based on work from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, can carry information about a file’s origin and edits. They do not prove that a story is true, but they can make the history of an asset more inspectable. That history is only useful when the production team preserves it.
Define what must be traceable
Start with the risk of the project. A fictional mood film, a product demonstration, a political message, and a documentary interview have different expectations. Write a short policy that names which generated uses are allowed, which require approval, what must be disclosed, and which scenes cannot be synthesized or materially altered.
Include vendors and freelancers. A clean internal policy breaks when a stock shot, cleanup pass, voice treatment, or external VFX delivery arrives without history. Put provenance and AI-use requirements into the brief and handoff checklist, not a last-minute email.
- Captured original and device metadata.
- Licensed stock, music, fonts, and model releases.
- Generated or extended image, video, voice, and audio.
- Material retouching, compositing, and context-changing edits.
Keep originals and derivatives connected
Preserve camera originals and verified backups before transcoding. For generated media, retain the source input, model or tool, date, operator, prompt or operation where appropriate, output, and approval record. Use stable asset identifiers so a generated plate can be traced after it is renamed in the edit.
Do not rely on folder memory. Store the provenance note with the asset or in a linked manifest. A timeline marker is useful for the editor, but the record also needs to survive project consolidation and archive.

Carry the record through review
Make material AI uses visible during approval. A client cannot consent to a transformation hidden in a technical log. Show the shot, explain what changed, and record the decision. If a synthetic element depicts a real person, product behavior, location, or event, increase the level of scrutiny.
Version the manifest with the cut. When a generated shot is replaced, the old record should remain associated with the superseded version rather than disappearing. This protects both the client and the production team when questions arrive months later.

- Capture approval, rejection, or requested disclosure.
- Update the record when the asset changes.
Test the delivered file and platform
Metadata can be stripped during export, transcode, upload, or distribution. Test the actual path and verify the delivered file. If credentials do not survive, provide a human-readable disclosure or separate manifest appropriate to the audience and contract.
Provenance is not a truth detector. A credential can describe how media was made without proving every claim inside it, and an uncredentialed file is not automatically deceptive. The professional value is accountability: the team can show its process, distinguish capture from synthesis, and respond to questions with evidence instead of memory.

- No. They can provide tamper-evident provenance information about origin and edits, but the truth of the story still requires editorial verification.
- Should every AI-assisted edit be disclosed on screen?
- Not necessarily. Disclosure should reflect materiality, audience expectation, contract, platform rules, and risk. Internal documentation should still be complete.
- What if a platform strips credentials?
- Test the delivery path and use another appropriate disclosure or manifest when embedded provenance does not survive.
